The Link Between Stress and Infertility

This disruptive emotion can trigger biochemical reactions, which can affect our daily functions. Stress is also one of major causes of infertility. This is especially something to consider if medical tests have shown no other reasons. The rates of unexplained infertility have multiplied over the last couple of decades, which is no surprise due to our overly stressful lives. Before you go for very intense, possibly harmful (and very expensive!) infertility treatments, spend some time on stress management - it could be the key to the baby of your dreams!

My favorite meditation practice is easy, and you can do it anywhere - even at your desk! Close your eyes if possible (it will work with your eyes open but I find it's better with them closed) and breathe in for 4 secondes. Then hold the breath for 7 seconds, and spend 8 seconds exhaling. If possible, let yourself make a sound when you exhale - nothing too weird, a simple "whooo" will do. Check out this video to see Dr. Andrew Weil (love that guy) doing a good demonstration.

Learn a new hobby

One great thing about this city is the sheer amount of things you can do. Often taking a class that interests you can re-awaken the creative juices, and can be an excellent technique to break you out of your routine. This list, compiled by our friends at Time Out New York, has some out-of-the box ideas if you need help thinking of something.

Take time out for yourself

File this under "easy to say, hard to do," but DO IT ANYWAY! Go for a walk in the park or read that book that you've been meaning to get to. There are many self help books that teach relaxation techniques if that interest you, otherwise maybe it'a a fantasy or mystery that will let you forget your troubles for a while. Personal tip: skip the screen-reader. For stress management, nothing beats an old dusty book.

Get a massage or a facial

Many spas offer specials that are relatively inexpensive. Splurge a little bit on yourself. Not only will you feel better, you'll also be practicing self care, something that all women need to focus on these days. Check out Groupon or Living Social at very least, they have very good deals.

Finally, do whatever you can to let some fun into your life. This can be a major factor when combating stress and finding the answer to your infertility.
